Choosing a nutrient line? Match the line to your growing medium and your tap water; brand loyalty comes second. Canna is the benchmark with a range for every medium, Biobizz the organic soil pick, Dutch Pro the value line with dedicated UK hard- and soft-water versions, Plagron the most flexible system, and Gold Label the hydro specialist. All five grow excellent plants; the costly mistake is bottles built for the wrong medium or water.

A nutrient line is a matched family of base feeds and additives from one manufacturer, designed to cover a plant's needs from rooting to harvest on a single feed chart. The five lines below dominate UK grow-shop shelves and differ far more in format — organic or mineral, one-part or two-part, water-matched or not — than in results. Still choosing a medium? How do Biobizz, Canna, Dutch Pro, Plagron and Gold Label compare?

The shortlist, ranked by how easy each line is to buy right, not by plant quality:

1. Canna — the benchmark. A dedicated range for every medium; the proven pick for coco.
2. Biobizz — the organic one. Certified-organic bottles at low doses; the simple, forgiving soil choice.
3. Dutch Pro — the UK water specialist. Every base feed comes in hard- and soft-water versions; strong value for awkward tap water.
4. Plagron — the flexible system. Four "grow styles" from fully organic to fully hydro under one brand.

Which nutrient line suits soil, coco or hydro?

Match the product range to the medium — never run a soil feed in a hydro system.

Three things stand out: Canna is the only line here with a dedicated recirculating range (Aqua); Dutch Pro covers coco and hydro with one A&B feed; and Plagron's organic Alga line is soil-only — Plagron itself says it is not suitable for hydro.

Hard water or soft water: which version do you need?

The Drinking Water Inspectorate classes supplies up to 100 mg/l of calcium carbonate as soft, over 200 mg/l as hard and over 300 mg/l as very hard. Much of central, eastern and southern England sits in the hard bands — including Peterborough, where chalky groundwater keeps Anglian Water's region firmly hard — while Scotland, Wales and the north-west trend soft.

Hard water already carries plenty of calcium and magnesium, soft water very little, so one formulation cannot suit both — a distinction generic (usually American) comparisons skip. Dutch Pro makes every base feed — Soil A&B and Hydro/Coco A&B, Grow and Bloom — in separate hard- and soft-water versions, the soft-water bottles supplementing the calcium and magnesium your tap lacks; Canna does the same within its Hydro range. If your line has no water versions, you'll balance with Cal-Mag instead — more on that below.

How far does a bottle go? Cost per litre of mixed feed

Ignore shelf price and work out what a litre of mixed feed costs: divide 1,000 by the label dose in ml/L to get the litres of feed a 1-litre bottle makes, then divide the bottle price by that figure — for both parts of a two-part line.

(Gold Label doses to EC rather than a fixed ml/L, so it isn't costed here — check the bottle's target EC and your meter.) Label doses across these lines vary several-fold — from around 1 ml/L for a light soil feed to 5 ml/L for a full-strength one, and a two-part feed at 3 ml/L of each part uses 6 ml of concentrate per litre. That's why a cheap-looking bottle with a heavy dose can cost more per feed than a pricier concentrate: do the division before judging value.

What do the boosters and additives in each line actually do?

You don't need every additive a brand sells; these are the ones worth knowing:

• Canna: Rhizotonic (root stimulant), Cannazym (enzymes), Boost Accelerator and PK 13/14 (flowering).
• Biobizz: Root Juice, Top-Max (bloom), Alg-A-Mic (stress recovery) and the classic Fish Mix soil conditioner.
• Dutch Pro: Take Root, Multi Total (breakdown of organic matter) and Explode (bloom).
• Plagron: Power Roots, Pure Zym, Sugar Royal and Green Sensation — the additive Plagron growers rarely skip.
• Gold Label: the Ultra LED trio (No.1 Grow, No.2 Bloom, No.3 Boost), a simple all-substrate system.

Do you need Cal-Mag with these lines?

It depends on your water and your line. Canna designs its nutrients for tap water with a calcium-and-magnesium background EC of 0.4–0.7, recommending Cal-Mag only to lift very soft or reverse-osmosis water to that floor. Dutch Pro's soft-water versions build the extra calcium and magnesium in — the right water version can spare you a separate Cal-Mag bottle. What about Athena, Advanced Nutrients and FloraMax?

Three more lines on our shelves deserve a mention: Athena, a commercial-style system of Blended A&B liquids or concentrated Pro powders for bigger, dialled-in rooms; Advanced Nutrients, the deep catalogue, with Sensi Grow and Bloom in standard and coco-specific versions; and FloraMax, a compact hydro range built around VegaFlora A&B. FAQ

Is Canna better than Biobizz? Neither is better — they solve different problems. Canna is a mineral line with medium-specific ranges and the long-standing coco benchmark; Biobizz is a certified-organic line at its simplest in soil. Pick by medium and growing philosophy, not brand reputation.

Do I need hard water or soft water nutrients? Check your water company's postcode checker. Above roughly 200 mg/l of calcium carbonate your supply is officially hard, and much of central, eastern and southern England qualifies. If your line offers water versions — Dutch Pro across the board, Canna in its Hydro range — buy the one that matches your area.

What are the best nutrients for coco in the UK? Canna Coco A&B is the long-standing benchmark, with Dutch Pro Hydro/Coco A&B (in hard- and soft-water versions), Plagron Cocos A&B and Gold Label HydroCoco A&B close behind. Whichever you pick, use a coco-specific base feed rather than a soil one.

Can you mix nutrient brands? Within reason. Growers routinely run one brand's base feed with another brand's additives, but feed charts assume their own products, so mixing makes troubleshooting harder. Keep one base feed and change one thing at a time.
