A grow tent's ideal humidity falls as the plant matures — high for rootless seedlings, dry and airy for dense flowers. Measure RH at canopy height and walk it down stage by stage.

One number worth remembering: a plant releases 97-99.5% of the water its roots take up straight back into the air as vapour, mostly through transpiration (a trace escapes via guttation) (Modern Plant Physiology, via Wikipedia). That is why a well-watered tent turns humid so fast, and why humidity control is really moisture management once the canopy fills out.
Why does grow room humidity spike — especially in summer?
Humidity spikes because plants are moisture pumps and warm air holds more water. Two things stack up in summer.
First, RH climbs when the tent cools. Relative humidity is relative to temperature — the same water vapour reads higher in cooler air. So the moment lights switch off and the tent drops a few degrees, RH jumps, often by 10-20 points, though nothing was added. Lights-off is exactly when cool, damp, still air meets peak bud-rot risk.
Second, UK summer air is often already humid. A muggy warm front means your intake air carries more moisture to begin with, so extraction has less headroom to dump what plants transpire.

How do I lower humidity in a grow tent?
To lower humidity, remove moist air faster than plants add it — extraction first, then a dehumidifier if extraction alone can't hold the target:
- Turn up extraction. Your inline exhaust fan pulls damp air out and drags drier air in; a speed-controllable one pushes harder on humid nights. It's your cheapest lever — kit you already run.
- Add air movement. An oscillating or clip fan breaks up the still, humid pockets in the canopy and against the walls, where mould starts.
- Water smarter. Water early in lights-on, clear standing runoff, and don't overwater. Less free water means less to evaporate.
- Run a dehumidifier. When extraction is maxed and RH still won't drop — common in late veg and flower — it removes water directly to a set target.
A dehumidifier earns its place in flower most, when the target is lowest (30-40%) and mould risk highest. Site it inside the tent or the surrounding "lung room" it breathes from.
How do I raise humidity in a grow tent?
To raise humidity, add moisture with a humidifier and ease off extraction so you're not pulling it back out — mainly an early-grow job. Seedlings and fresh clones have almost no working roots, so they drink through their leaves and need 65-80% RH to avoid stalling.
- Run a humidifier sized to the space, ideally one that reads RH and switches off at target.
- Use a humidity dome or propagator over seedlings and cuttings to trap moisture locally.
- Turn extraction to minimum during propagation, since aggressive venting strips the humidity you're building.
Once roots establish and the canopy drinks properly, the job flips from adding moisture to removing it.
Dehumidifier, extraction or humidifier — which do I actually need?
Most UK growers need all three levers across a cycle, rarely at once. Match the tool to the job:

The honest rule of thumb: fix airflow before you buy a box. A correctly sized extraction fan plus a circulator solves humidity for many small UK tents; a dehumidifier or humidifier tops up the stages airflow can't reach. What size dehumidifier do I need for a grow tent?

First, plants do most of the work — a mature 4 × 4 ft canopy can transpire on the order of 4-8 litres (1-2 gallons) of water vapour a day, which the dehumidifier has to match. Second, size up about 25-30% for a dense canopy, a humid room, or drying flowers in the space. A small 60 × 60 cm (2 × 2 ft) or 80 × 80 cm (2.6 × 2.6 ft) tent with good extraction often needs no dehumidifier at all.
Does high humidity really cause mould and bud rot?
Yes — high humidity is the single biggest driver of mould, and dense flowers are the prime target. Two problems dominate, both humidity-led:
- Grey mould / bud rot (Botrytis cinerea) is the serious one — it rots buds from the inside and spreads fast. It is favoured by cool, damp, still air above roughly 85% RH; actual spore germination needs prolonged leaf wetness — on the order of 8-12 hours — at very high humidity (around 93%+) and cool temperatures of about 13-18°C (55-65°F): precisely the damp, lights-off flowering environment to avoid. Keeping flowering RH below about 50% sharply cuts the risk.
- Powdery mildew coats leaves in white dust and is favoured by RH above roughly 55-60%, even without free water on the leaf. Holding veg toward the lower end of its 50-70% band and flower at 40-50% keeps it in check.
Because dense flowers trap moisture in their cores, a bud's interior sits far wetter than your canopy meter reads. So the flowering strategy is dry and moving air: low RH removes the fuel, a circulator kills the still pockets where spores settle. Steady beats see-sawing — the lights-off spike is when infections take hold.
